#2) P21 Statement on the State of the Union

Fusing 3r's- reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic with the 4C's- critical thinking/problem solving, collaboration, communication, creativity and innovation is the motivation behind P21 in an effort to ready every student for the future global economy. We've seen and heard all of this before. Its called 'The 80's". Each core and elective course all ready requires some form of the 3r's in its lesson plan. Two of the 4C's, collaboration and communication, went out the window with the invention of computer and cell phone. According to NPR, this week, most students prefer to text, about 300 texts a month. They actually want to avoid people, especially when they're talking about that person. According to the broadcast, they'll talk to their parents when it's necessary to receive a 'yes' and to reassure them of a situation.
We'll be talking about this in the next century.

  1. Dawn, you sound a bit pessimistic about our future leaders. What's the positive side of kids texting and communicating via cell phones? Seems to me it opens the door to lots more collaboration if guided by a good teacher.

  2. I see students separated, isolated, depressed and lonely. I see syndrome's to behaviors and attitudes we haven't named yet. I see increased gang activity and a disconnect from human emotion. I see impatient adults with the ability to purchase illegal and legal substances and wepontry (sp). I see money spent on objects and not on building and sustaning relationships and memories with family, friends and/or enemies. I personally dont like it. I'm getting old(er).

  3. I see both. I, too, have read that with all the communication out there, people feel more alone than ever, desperate for human contact and real connections. I find a number of benefits to computers and cell phones, especially when I'm at the grocery store and need to call home to see what I'm forgetting. :) But I think there needs to be guidance, and access to people! Real people! If students are taught to combine the two, things will be better off. But, man, can you guess what the carpal tunnel stats will be like in 30 years from all the texting?
